What is your focus within your sport (what sub-discipline of your sport do you do most)? Why do you like that aspect the most?
To ‘perform’ at my best in Ironman Hawaii, and a dream of breaking 8 hours over the Iron-Distance someday… It means I have to continue to try and improve at all 3 disciplines (not just one), swim/bike/run, and it also means I get to enjoy/focus of something different from time to time.
What is the strangest thing that has happened to you while doing your sport?
I’m usually (so I say myself) reasonably cool, calm, and collected… but, I once threw a bit of a tantrum in a race in Taiwan. It was hot, very hot, and I was about 6km in to the Marathon part of my race. I hadn’t managed to get any water up until this point as I was the first person through the aid stations and the volunteers were busy clapping and supporting rather than giving me water… I got to an aid station about 6km in to the run and I was yelling out water, water, and a lady yelled back at me “yes, I have a small ice cold water,” she was holding a small cup and it was indeed cold, but it was not water. They have a different taste for things in Asia, and when I drunk the drink it was their local electrolyte mix, which I am not a fan of. I lost the plot, threw the cup on the ground and yelled, THAT WASN’T WATER! I regained myself after that and yelled back sorry, then carried on my merry way.
Do you have a local claim to fame (fittest, fastest, funniest, smelliest, etc.)?
Not really – I am often thought to have good balance in what I do – for me it is simple, Triathlon is my job, and outside of that I try and live as normal a life as possible. If I couldn’t live a normal life with friends and family, I don’t think I would be able to do this sport professionally.
Do you promote an annual event or are you involved in a charitable cause?
Challenge Wanaka is one event I promote, but not officially. To me it encompasses a lot of what I am about – balance – friends, family, enjoyment.
Notable recent results?
I am a 3x winner of Challenge Wanaka, 2x of Challenge Taiwan, 3 other Iron-Distance Podiums, and 4x half-distance podiums over the last 4 years.
Anything else you would like to add about yourself or your sport?
If you are lucky enough to do Triathlon don’t forget to enjoy it and keep a good balance.
